Catalac 12m (1984–1988)

The Flagship Bluewater Model

The Catalac 12m was the largest and most capable model, designed for offshore cruising and long-term living aboard. It was a significant design step forward, offering superior performance under sail, more luxurious accommodation, and modern styling, while still holding true to the Catalac brand’s values of strength, redundancy, and reliability.

Key Features:

  • LOA: 12.19 metres (40 ft)
  • Beam: 5.5 metres (18 ft)
  • Displacement: ~7.7 tons
  • Draft: ~1.0m
  • Twin diesel engines (usually Yanmar)
  • Sloop, with heavier rigging for ocean use
  • Four separate cabins, two heads compartments, large saloon, and full galley

The 12m was praised for its:

  • Genuine offshore capability
  • Excellent living space, including a full-width saloon
  • Safe sailing characteristics with twin rudders and good visibility
  • Tough GRP layup that gave it superior strength compared to many contemporary multihulls

Though only a limited number were built (estimates range around 20 to 30), the 12m is seen as the pinnacle of the Catalac line and is still cruising globally today.

A Legacy of Practical Cruising

From the humble origins of Bobcat and the design leadership of John Winterbotham, the Catalac range stood apart in a world increasingly focused on speed and sleek lines. These boats were about real-world cruising, often in challenging conditions, with a focus on family fun.
